Gungrave for me actually started off on the wrong foot. The first episode left me scratching my head and muttering “WTF???” Then top that off with the title character dressed like a gay cowboy, or what Japanese people think a gay cowboy should like and I was convinced that I didn’t wanna watch it. Good thing morbid curiosity won the day or I woulda missed out on a helluva series.... Continue Reading...

To watch anime with subtitles or not - that is the question. Some purists believe that the only way to truly appreciate anime is to watch with the subtitles on and only with subtitles. These are the same people who want to learn Japanese so that they can read their manga the way it was written. That’s hardcore and sad at the same time.... Continue Reading...
Last Exile was a big disappointment for me. Perhaps it was disappointing because of the way I built it up in my head or maybe it was a disappointment because the plot sucked. I actually had to make myself watch this anime for the first five or six episodes since the dialog and story were just so bad. And what shitty dialog indeed. I’ve heard better lines in a video game. I considered canceling the order for the rest of the series but disc two was already in the mail when we finished disc one. So, for lack of nothing better to do, we watched the rest of Last Exile.... I posted an article a while back titled “Where to Pocket Pocky†in which I listed two places in St. Louis to get your Asian goody groove on. One was Global Foods in Kirkwood and the other was J International Food. I have thus far only visited J International Food, which is only like nine blocks away. Wow, that place is bigggg. At least it’s the biggest international grocery store I’ve ever been to.... Continue Reading...
I was walking around Crestwood Plaza in St. Louis on Sunday and decided to check out Waldenbooks, which I know sells manga and wall scrolls. While looking through the wall scrolls for a Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children one, I turned to a fellow fan and asked him if he had seen any FFVII: Advent Children merchandise anywhere in the area. He got this weird look and said he hadn’t - the movie wasn’t even released yet. I had to smile at myself for that. I’d forgotten that for most people in North America, their first viewing of Advent Children would be in January 2006, while mine was September 24th 2005 thanks to David)! As lame as the fact is that I remember when I first saw Advent Children, it’s even lamer that as of yet I have not reviewed a movie that I’ve seen 12 times and counting.... Continue Reading...
Don’t you just hate it when you’re looking at some really awe-inspiring fan art when all of a sudden out pops some yaoi? To all you lucky un-initiated out there, yaoi is anime/manga and even mainstream cartoon pairings of two “bishie†male characters either engaged in light petting/embraces to downright 3x porn (hentai)....
