The Anime Blog Poll: Who Do You Feel, Ultimately, Should Have the Most Influence On the Anime That Gets Produced?

Who Do You Feel, Ultimately, Should Have the Most Influence On the Anime That Gets Produced?

Approaching this question from an artist’s POV, I’d love to say, “The Creator - duh!” but I also know, from an artist’s POV, that what I like to make might not necessarily sell as well as what other people want me to make. For example; while I loved making elaborate pieces that I pulled out of my own imagination, I also took commissions and made stuff I really didn’t want to make and I made pieces that followed what was fashionable at the time in order to put food on the table. It galled me and made me feel like a sell out but, them’s the facts of life.

Keeping along that train of thought, is “them’s the facts of life” that we have so much fanservice heavy anime lately? Is “thems the facts of life” that moe is becoming more prevalent in anime? Or is it just that we have a dearth of producers with independent ideas and creative concepts? Are the studios listening to what the fans want or are they truly producing someone’s “unique” vision?

It’s such a long drawn out process to make anything these days, from conception to completion. First comes the idea, then comes the planning, then the actual process, and during that process come changes, then implementing said changes, then tweaking the final product, then marketing the product, and then distributing the product. In that long assembly line of processes, who gets to have a say in what gets made? How many people get to whisper in the creator’s ear and get to put their 2 cents in? Who should get to put their two cents in?

Some things fans might want to mull over when considering the question are:

  • Do I want something new?
  • Do I like the direction anime is headed?
  • Is the status quo my bestest friend in this situation?
  • Do I value creativity?
  • Am I an anime literaist or visualist?

After answering those and, hopefully, other questions to your satisfaction: Who do you feel, ultimately, should have the most influence on the anime that gets produced?

I’m not certain I can answer that in a single vote.

And you are correct. What an artist wants may not necessarily sell well, but at the same time,w hat the producers/marketers try to get artists to produce will be formulaic and selling to the lowest common denominator.

It needs to be a balance, a dialog, between the artists and the producers. So that we get new and exiting stuff - that makes money.

If they don’t have that dialog, then what we’ll end up with is a hundred thousand Naruto’s and no Sayanora Zetsubuo Sensei. Sure, the Naruto will sell a whole lot more, especially to the “unwashed masses” here States-side, but Sayanora Zetsubuo Sensai is a hilarious black comedy, which might not sell quite as well.

Wait, what?

F the fans, they’ll buy ANYTHING. I mean, just look at the traversty that was GSD. Stanked to high heaven, and yet, the fans ate it up, yaoi and all.

I say the guy with the most cash gets the say. that means the shareholders, if the company is listed, or the floogin’ BOARD OF DIRECTORS.

Yep, that’s right, the BOARD OF DIRECTORS needs to have the final say.

If we left the choice to the fans, well, let’s just say the fans can never agree on what makes animé good. Leave it to the directors and animantion houses, we have no floogin’ idea what might come out. And the creator Pfft. Creators are too protective of their series to let ANYONE mess it up, unless they are paid well.

Yeah, the BOARD OF DIRECTORS need to have the final say.

Also, marketing sells stuff, good OR bad.

In something that is as complex and has as many steps as this, I think it’s impossible to single out one for the most influence. Ultimately though, making anime is, for everyone except the fans, a job and way to earn a salary. Creating, marketing, and producing anime that doesn’t sell well isn’t going to benefit anyone. I know very little about the technical side of things, but whoever is most in touch with the general fans would probably know what fans like and what they might like.

Voted for “Fans who pay” because anime is a market driven industry. Studios just don’t produce anime for heck of it, they do it to make a profit. Anime or anything entertainment related is made only after an idea can successfully be pitched to either a studio or publisher as one that can make a return on the investment needed to produce it. Even when a Creator, Writer, Director is given more creative control, it is because the studio knows fans will more than likely buy into the new project.

Going through the rest of the choices…

“ALL Fans” - If a studio gets nothing in return from freeloaders (P2P only, Bootlegs), is it really obligated to listen to their opinions?

“Distributors” - Pretty much an advocate for “fans who pay”

“Marketing Department” - Up there with “Fans who pay” because they are responsible for selling the product and receiving feedback about why something works or does not.

The Rest - See my first paragraph. They certainly do have some influence about what gets made, but are either reliant on consumers or relegated to a niche market if they have total control/influence.

@Kidan, I agree that this is an issue that can’t really be decided by clicking on a poll, but at least the poll starts dialog like this one ^^. So, in your opinion, it’s a dialog between artists and producers. I can definitely see why that’d be apropos; on the one side is the idea man and the other is the actual get-it-done guy (the actual, technical term for producer, FYI).

@ DrmChsr0, Bwahahah F the fans! Ahh, good stuff…Board of Directors? Hmm, OK, let me go along with that for a sec. *sits back and contemplates possible scenario*:

The Board of Directors usually only give a crap about one thing :cha-ching. What brings in cha ching? Anything anime? Or stuff like Kidchan was referencing, stuff like Naruto, Inuyasha and the like? Stuff that is, not only a never-ending cash cow, but has so much merchandise potential they can slap a Naruto sticker on a turd and someone will buy it. So, the BoD, when determining what gets made that year will have last year’s sales on hand:

Board member #1: “Hey, look, Bleach is making an ass-load of money, and we’re not even trying! ”

Board member #2: “Sweet, let’s pay some dude $15 bucks for another idea, just like it, and have another sure fire million, I mean hit.”

Board members proceed to swim in a pool of cash…

Eventually, or not, the companies will saturate the market, anime will suck, and drooling, mind-wiped Naruto fans will take over the industry. *shudder* That, however, is just my cynical, slightly embittered take on what might happen if BoD members have a say.

@griever, yeah, it’s hard to single out one, but discussion ensues! While fan pandering is what makes money, I think there’s a market for “indie” anime studios. Folks who gather an underground following and eventually, force their way into the mainstream and are able to produce what they want since they’re so well beloved! And that’s my over-optimistic, cheery side-up opinion. In conclusion, it’s a team effort to get anything made. Maybe it’s best to have like minded folks working together on a project instead of cobbling a team together because of past successes.

You’ve asked us:

# Do I want something new?
# Do I like the direction anime is headed?

I see a lot of “Do I…”. That’s basically the answer. It’s *us* who decide what looks innovative and *we* are the ones who decide if we like the direction anime is heading. However, fans that don’t pay for official media (DVDs, CDs) and related goods can’t enforce their ideas. Fans that do can. You will not be able to end the Gundam franchise unless you stop the cash flow or forbid it by Law. And this is something the Japanese are good at–keeping franchises alive, because they don’t just throw out every great idea to the public when they think it up. They harvest their new ideas and incorporate them in their work over time and as the environment allows. Being a creator in Japan is knowing the trends, knowing the fan community, having an open mind… It’s not an easy job, especially because there’s tough competition out there. Because of that, they have to differentiate their product from others in some way. If it weren’t so, everyone and their mum would be making porn and nothing else, and even the AV market and eroge market hopefully learned their lesson because of their recent oversaturation.

I think the original creator, the director, and the producers who are putting it out there
should get the most say in the anime being made i think that no anime can succeed if it becomes nothing
more than a fanservice or marketing attempt because it loses its originality and creativity
that defines it without those things the anime simply becomes the same thing as all the other
anime out there, the reason shows like Fullmetal Alchemist, Inyasha, Bleach, Naruto, and DBZ
have become so popular was that they differ from their counterparts or are the first of their
kind and that attracts a lot more ppl and makes for better anime

@Zack, so your vote is for writers?

@ Anya, We fans influence creators by our purchases? Or do we fans influence the marketing who in turn put pressure on creators?

@ Sakkresh, sadly, a lot of anime has become nothing but fanservice, IMO. I’m sure many folk would disagree with that, but my idea of fanservice has stricter parameters than other people’s.
The shows you listed don’t register on my radar since they lack, IMO, a solid plotline. I’m a fan of solid plotlines….
