Ok, so who totally flipped out over last week’s release of the “final” installment of Harry Potter, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows? Who waited in line and who got frisky when they finally had Harry Potter’s last soirée with Voldy in their hands? I ordered mine through Amazon so I didn’t wait in line but I did indeed get frisky when I cracked the spine on this bad boy.

I finished DH in 8.45 hours and, wow, just wow. I simply cannot wait to see this book on the big screen! Merlin’s Beard, I’m so stoked! I also saw Order of the Phoenix this past Saturday and once again, wow.
But, you know, a lot of stuff got left out of the last movie. And that’s understandable since lordee knows, the books are frick’n epic. Fortunately, I have a solution for this dilemma; Harry Potter manga!
It’s a great idea and, there’s precedent for it in the way of Star Wars manga, Wizard of Oz manga, and even a sequel manga to Labyrinth. These are all well-loved American films that have a sizable fan base and cult-followings; just like Harry Potter.
If HP gets made into a manga, fans’ll get more fleshed out visuals than the movies (though the movies are brilliant) and we’ll get to see our fave HP characters manga-ized.
On my favorite artist community, deviantART, there’s a ton of manga style fan-art of the Harry Potter crew. Especially of the bad boys of the series; Lucius, Draco, and everyone’s fave troubled-soul poster-child, Snape.
There’s even disturbing/ hilarious HP yaoi of DracoxHarry and SnapexLucius. HP chibis also abound on DA. In my opinion, HP has already taken its first step down the manga path.

So after deciding that HP manga is indeed a good idea, I began to ponder who should actually draw the manga. One possibility that came to mind was CLAMP. It’s a good idea, and yet, a bad idea. Good in the sense that CLAMP has a fan-following and people will read it because they’re fans of CLAMP and like their style. However, CLAMP also has a reputation for it’s shoujo style and that might turn off potential readers. That would be the bad part.
I think that an artistic style that’s neither shoujo nor shonen is the way to go for a Harry Potter manga. A style that’s too soft might only attract women and turn off male readers. A style that’s too shonen wouldn’t even fit into the HP’s style. A happy balance of the two would be a great comprise.
Also, I think a HP manga will kill two birds with one stone in terms of satiating the fan-girl’s demand for more Harry/ Draco/ Snape/ Lucius/ whoever and have them done in their fave bishie style (I fear for Lucius however; how much more femme can that guy get and still be a dude? Let’s face it, bishie-fy him and he’s a chick).
All around I think a Harry Potter manga is a smashing idea. Who else thinks so? Are you a fan of merging HP and manga? Who else wants Harry Potter manga?!

I would definitely say hell no for CLAMP. As good as their stuff is, they make guys way too girly, and that would totally ruin HP.

I think Hiromu Arakawa (Manga-ka of Fullmetal Alchemist) would be good.

@DKong, I really don’t like CLAMP’s style, but I threw it out there since they’re a well known manga group who fangirls luv. I mean, imagine being J.K. Rowling and someone says, “Hey, we wanna make a manga outta your books!” She’d be like, “WTF, manga, huh?”
@Zack, if you’re interested in the books but don’t have the time to read 700 pages of HP awesomeness, they have the books on CD. I recommend them for busy people. That’s the only way a friend of mine caught up to book 7. Otherwise, I’d still be asking him to leave the room while we discussed HP. But a manga would be additional goodness! I wants me more goodness now that the series is “over”!

Harry Potter manga would be awesome. (As well as an anime x3). I’d totally buy it if it was published. The debated as too who should make it… I think Arakawa-sensei would be a good idea, or… (I’m trying to think of another artist I know of that draws in-between shounen and shoujo) the guy who draws Azumanga Daioh? (Yeah, shoot me, I forgot his name ;-;)

@Digichan, finding the right manga-ka for the job would probably be the toughest decision in getting the manga made and published. Arakawa would be an interesting choice.
@sharon, I don’t think that there are any officially licensed HP manga out yet. However, there are quite a few Harry Potter doujinshi. The titles and descriptions can be viewed at Addiction; a Harry Potter Doujinshi website.

Yes. This would be awesome! However, you’d have to be REALLY careful with it. If you mess up on a character design, or even how scenes are drawn out, you could make something aweful. You’d need an expirienced artist. Whoever did Ruroni Kenshin, which in many ways have a similar feel to it. If katanas were wands…

I think that the character designs should be done by Kosuke Fujishima, who is known for the character designs for Tales of Phantasia.

Harry Potter is a really, really dark story if you look deep enough.
Hey, do want XD Koge-Donbo (the person who did Di-gi-charat) even did some fanarts, but their style is too shoujo. Kia Asamiya is well known by doing manga versions of ocidental medias, like Batman or X-Men, and also did shoujos like Corrector Yui, if he would make a manga of Harry Potter, it could be awesome. Really.
I would totally buy the manga! After I finished the 7th book I felt such a loss at the end! But I think Natsuki Takaya (creator of Fruits Basket (absolutely brilliant)) would be perfect to draw it! If you’ve read Fruits Basket I think it has the perfect balance of Shouji and Shonen. just putting that out there.
@Everyone, seems like we’re all on board with idea of HP manga. Would you prefer the manga follow the story or uncover new ground?
If it would be different stories I think it should have a different name like “Harry Potter: The Uncovered Stories” or something a lot less cheesy. It’s kinda like Yu-Gi-Oh GX… only a lot less horrible… a lot less…

I would SO get it within less then a billionth of a heartbeat!!! I’m sorry, but I always felt that HP should have been made into a manga ever since I saw my friend’s bro with a Star Wars one, and I’m VERY surprised that one hasn’t come out yet!! T_T As for who should do it, I think that CLAMP would do a very good job at it, since almost all HP fanime and doujinshi sketches give the characters the super-big eyes that’s most recognizable in the shojo-style of Cardcaptors or Sailor Moon. It would break my heart though, if the dudes who did it were the ones who did Naruto (no offense to Naruto lovers (I like it too!), but that style of art wouldn’t do any justice to the HP world).

@Tsuki-Chan, I don’t know whether or not JK Rowling is even aware of manga, or if her marketing people are either. She really does need to do something with the HP franchise and I think now is the time to do it before it fizzles from everyone’s memory. Even with the movies still being made, the impact of HP manga would be greater now than later.

Well, I’d buy it. The art would have to be good enough, and stay faithful to the appearance of the characters (like not making them into supersexyshojoboys).
There are a LOT of people who love manga and Harry Potter, but then there are also a lot of people who love HP and dislike manga. I’m just not sure how many are in each category.
The artists would have to be careful not to bishie-ify the characters…how long would the manga run, anyway? There’s a thought.
All in all, if handeled well, an HP manga would be awesome.

Hmm, you just know JK Rowlings has a ton of ideas she could use for manga. I bet she could fill out many story arcs. She could even have a yaoi line by delving into Dumbledore’s (she did say he was gay) past with what’s his name. Yeah, and then make that the manga where everyone’s bishi and pretty.
This is a fertile medium, so it’s hard to say how long it would run. Maybe for six volumes each arc? Or maybe it never ends but becomes the next Bleach…. I say we pitch the idea to her and see what she says ^^!
